Why these three belong together

Each of these novels finds Hemingway's characters tested to their limits, whether by nature, war or their own restless hearts. Together they span three decades of his career and show the range beneath his famously economical style, from a solitary battle at sea to the wreckage and resilience of the interwar years.

The Old Man and the Sea (1952)

An ageing fisherman sets out alone for the biggest catch of his life, and finds himself locked in a battle against the sea, his own body and time itself. It is a slim, quietly devastating story about dignity in the face of struggle, and it remains one of Hemingway's most beloved works.

The Sun Also Rises (1926)

A group of disillusioned expatriates drift from the cafes of Paris to the bullrings of Spain, drinking and loving their way around the wounds left by the First World War. This was the novel that defined the Lost Generation, capturing a restless, wandering search for meaning after unimaginable loss.

A Farewell to Arms (1929)

An American ambulance driver serving on the Italian front falls into a passionate, doomed love affair with an English nurse amid the chaos of the First World War. Drawing on Hemingway's own wartime experience, it remains one of the twentieth century's great novels of love set against conflict.

Where to hang it

On its own
Hang so the middle of the print sits about 145 cm from the floor. That is eye level for most people and the height galleries use.
Above a sofa or bed
Leave 15 to 25 cm between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the frame, and pick a print roughly two thirds the width of the sofa.
A set of three
Keep 5 to 8 cm between frames and line up their middles. Three A4s or three A3s side by side read as one piece.
A gallery wall
Mix A5 and A4 around one larger A3 or A2. Lay it out on the floor first, then hang from the middle outwards.
