Why these three belong together

Between them these books defined the gothic imagination: the vampire, the created monster and the doomed, haunted love story. They span almost eighty years of the nineteenth century, yet share the same ingredients of isolation, obsession and weather that seems to have a will of its own, so they hang together as naturally as they sit together on a shelf.

Dracula (1897)

Castle Dracula rising out of an autumn forest in the Carpathians, turrets and all. Stoker's novel, told in letters and diaries, gave the world its most famous vampire.

Frankenstein (1818)

A lone figure in a frozen, moonlit forest. Mary Shelley began the story as a teenager during a ghost-story contest, and it is often called the first great work of science fiction.

Wuthering Heights (1847)

Heathcliff and Catherine on the wind-scoured Yorkshire moors under a heavy sky. Emily Brontë's only novel, and still the wildest love story in the canon.
