The shy Mr. Hoppy longs to win the heart of his neighbour, Mrs. Silver, but she has eyes only for her beloved tortoise, Alfie. His solution, an elaborate scheme involving dozens of tortoises and a secret backwards chant, is Dahl at his most charmingly absurd.

George's Marvellous Medicine (1970)

Fed up with his horrid grandma, young George concocts a potion from whatever he can find around the house. The results are spectacular and strange, sending Grandma soaring to giant heights before she shrinks away to nothing at all.
