Why these three belong together
These are the three founding novels of Earthsea, each following Ged at a different point in his life while widening the view of the archipelago itself. Read in order, they move from personal reckoning to questions of freedom and finally to the fate of the whole world, making them a natural trio for a single wall.
A Wizard of Earthsea (1968)
Young wizard Ged releases a shadow creature while showing off at magic school, then spends years fleeing across Earthsea's islands until he finally turns to confront and master it. It remains the essential coming-of-age story at the heart of the series.
The Tombs of Atuan (1971)
A girl is taken as a child to serve as high priestess of ancient desert tombs, where she meets a young wizard searching for a lost treasure and begins to question her fate. Le Guin turns the lens away from Ged to explore power and freedom from an entirely different vantage point.
The Farthest Shore (1972)
Archmage Ged and prince Arren sail across Earthsea to discover why magic is draining from the world, tracking a renegade wizard who has torn open the boundary between life and death. It closes the original trilogy with a meditation on mortality and legacy.
Styling your Earthsea wall
Hang the set in reading order, left to right, above a sofa, desk or bed, so the story unfolds as the eye travels along the wall.
