Regretting You by Colleen Hoover: A Full Summary and Reader's Guide

What Regretting You is about

Colleen Hoover published Regretting You in 2019. It is a contemporary family drama built around a mother and daughter who love each other and cannot seem to speak to each other without a fight. The story runs on two tracks. One belongs to Morgan Davidson, who became pregnant at seventeen by her boyfriend Chris Grant and shaped her whole adult life around that fact. The other belongs to Clara, the daughter born from that pregnancy, who is now seventeen herself and starting to make the kind of choices her mother never got to make.

Seventeen years after the opening, Morgan and Chris are married and raising Clara. Morgan's sister Jenny is back together with Jonah Sullivan, Chris's best friend, and they have an infant son, Elijah. There is an old complication underneath all of this. Jonah was the person Morgan confided in when she first found out she was pregnant, and he had feelings for her then that were never acted on.

Clara's own story starts on her mother's birthday, when she finds her classmate Miller Adams at the roadside, shifting the city limits sign a little further out each day. His plan is to move it past his grandfather's house so the pizzeria will finally deliver there. She helps. They discover they both want to work in film. The problem is that Miller already has a girlfriend, Shelby.

Then the book pivots. A sudden loss tears the two families open and forces Morgan and Clara to grieve the same event in completely different ways, with completely different information about what it meant.

The main characters

Morgan is the engine of the adult half of the novel. She gave up her own plans at seventeen and has spent years defining herself as a wife and mother. When that identity is pulled out from under her, she does not handle it gracefully. She destroys things. She throws herself into remodelling the house. Hoover does not sand her down into a saint.

Clara is seventeen, sharp, grieving and furious. A lot of her behaviour in the middle of the book is reactive, aimed squarely at her mother, and the novel is honest about how self-destructive that gets. One of its better moments has Clara stop herself mid-decision when she realises she is only doing something out of spite.

Miller Adams is the romantic lead and an unusually grounded one. He is a carer as much as a boyfriend, worried about who will look after his grandfather if he leaves for college. Jonah Sullivan is the adult equivalent, a man holding together a household and a baby while his own understanding of his marriage falls apart. Chris and Jenny shape the whole story, largely through what they leave behind.

The themes

Family is the core subject, specifically how grief divides people who should be leaning on each other. Morgan and Clara mourn the same losses while holding different pieces of the truth, and Morgan's decision to protect her daughter from information is what keeps them apart.

Identity sits alongside it. Morgan's life was decided for her at seventeen, and she watches Clara approach the same age with her options still open. The novel keeps asking whether a parent can be proud of a child's freedom without resenting it.

Death here is not just a tragedy, it is a revealer. The things the dead leave behind, letters, a car in the wrong car park, a painting nobody liked, keep rewriting what the living thought they knew. And love runs across both timelines, the teenage version and the adult version, with Hoover drawing a deliberate parallel between the two.

How it ends

Skip this section if you want the ending clean.

Chris and Jenny die in a car crash. Morgan and Jonah piece together that the two were having an affair, confirmed when they find Chris's car at a hotel and later discover hidden letters from Jenny. Jonah begins to suspect Chris may be Elijah's biological father. Morgan keeps all of it from Clara, who is privately convinced she caused the crash by texting Jenny.

After a disastrous birthday dinner and a night at the graves, Morgan finally tells Clara the truth: Chris was driving, the affair happened, and both of them still loved her. The confession repairs them. Mother and daughter give each other permission to be with the people they love. Clara apologises to Miller and they reunite at the cinema. Morgan and Jonah admit their feelings and burn Jenny's letters. At a family party, Miller shows Clara a video revealing he has loved her for two years. A short scene after the close has the city limits sign finally moved, and Miller ordering pizza.

Why it still matters

Regretting You remains one of Hoover's most widely read titles and reached the screen in 2025. Josh Boone directed, Susan McMartin wrote the screenplay, and the cast included Allison Williams, Mckenna Grace, Dave Franco and Mason Thames. It premiered at the Zoo Palast in Berlin on 12 October 2025, opened in Germany on 23 October through Constantin Film and in the United States on 24 October through Paramount Pictures. Reviews were largely negative, but it made $90.5 million worldwide against a $25 million budget, which says something about the size of the book's readership.

It suits readers who want contemporary drama with real emotional weight, who like a dual narrative splitting adult and teenage perspectives, and who do not mind a story where the parent is as flawed as the child.
