Titus Groan (1946)

Meanwhile the kitchen boy Steerpike begins his slow, calculating climb through the castle's hierarchy, using cunning and murder to reshape his own fortunes. Gormenghast (1950)

Now the seventy-seventh Earl of Gormenghast, Titus grows increasingly restless within the castle's oppressive traditions and eventually turns his back on the only world he has known. His former schoolmaster, nursing a dangerous grudge, sets out in pursuit. The novel deepens Peake's exploration of power and madness while pushing Titus toward the freedom beyond the castle walls.

Titus Alone (1959)

Titus finally leaves Gormenghast behind and stumbles into a strange, mechanised city unlike anything he has known. Among scientists, rebels and suspicious officials, he finds himself doubted at every turn, his very past questioned. The trilogy closes on a disorienting, dreamlike note, trading gothic grandeur for something altogether more modern and unsettling.
